Dos and Dont’s in Interview
Dos:
- Dress smartly, look bright and attentive, and speak clearly and confidently.
- Offer a firm handshake, make eye contact, and have a friendly expression when you are greeted by your interviewer.
- Sit up straight, and lean slightly forward in your chair. In addition to projecting interest and engagement in the interaction, aligning your body's position to that of the interviewer's shows admiration and agreement.
- Keep your hands where we can see them out of pockets when standing, on the table when sitting.
- Show your enthusiasm by keeping an interested expression.
- Talk with clear pronounciation fluently and politely.
- Be thorough in your responses, while being concise in your wording.
- Be honest and be yourself.
- Respond to questions and back up your statements about yourself with specific examples whenever possible.
- Ask for clarification if you don't understand a question.
- Do stress your achievements.
- Exhibit a positive attitude. The interviewer is evaluating you as a potential co-worker. Behave like someone you would want to work with.
- Turn off your mobile phone.
- Treat the interviewers with respect and give them your undivided attention.
- Don't be late. Know the exact time and location of your interview; know how long it takes to get there.
- Don't take your parents, your pet, spouse, fiance, friends or enemies to an interview.
- Chew gum or smell like smoke during the interview.
- Rub the back of your head or neck.Even if you really do just have a cramp in your neck, these gestures make you look disinterested.
- Cross your legs and idly shake one over the other. It's distracting and shows how uncomfortable you are.
- Don't read from notes or your CV. You should be familiar enough with your own history to be able to talk about it unprompted.
- Don't ever lie. Answer questions truthfully, frankly, succinctly, and don't over-answer questions.
- Don't be nervous or worry. Remember that excess anxiety can impair your performance. Practice deep breaths to relax.
- Don't swear or use slang words.
- Tell jokes during the interview.
- Act as though you would take any job or are desperate for employment.
- Don't be arrogant and assume you've got the job. Nothing turns off employers more than someone who is disrespectful and over-confident.
- Don't inquire about salary, vacations, bonuses, retirement, or other benefits until after you've received an offer.
